West Richland, Washington, is a community of approximately 11,000 residents situated nar the confluence of the Yakima and Columbia Rivers. In the early 1850s, a road was constructed in the Yakima Valley that passed through present-day West Richland, although there was little settlement until the 1870s. The community was incorporated in 1906 at a time when the area was commonly known as "Lower Yakima." In 1908, a critical irrigation canal was built to carry water to the area from north of the Horn Rapids Dam. The new water supply brought the fertile soil in this semi-arid region to life.

In 1917, the famous Yellowstone Trail was routed through the Yakima Valley, further spurring growth. Ultimately, the trail. stretched from Seattle all the way to Albany, New York.
